Help with Sql Management Studio Vista install

I just recently purchased a sony with Vista business preloaded. It seems like it came with MS 2005 Sql Server but I'm not sure what edition. I went to the start menu to locate the Management Studio however the only option was the Configuration file. I went to MS site and downloaded the 2005 Sql Server Express Edition with Advance Service SP2 and it installed correctly. I believe this edition comes with Management Studio. However when I went to my Start Menu, the Management Studio file is still not there. How do I fix this problem? I am new to the MS Sql so a detail explanation will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Most things in setup are disabled by default, you have to explicitelly select it from the feature list during installation. You can go into Add/Remove Programs, Select Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and click Change to add more features.

I think it must be Developer, Personnal and eval version to install because the same rule apply to XP professional. Help with SP3a

I ma trying to run Sp3a on a virtual server after SQL
Server install on it. However, it keeps saying that the
vitual server does not exist on the local machine. How do

So does the virtual server exist?
If yes, can you get connected to the virtual server say using Query Analyzer?
Is this a named virtual sql instance or default virtual sql instance?
What is the virtual server name (i.e. sql server network name)?
If you have named instance, what is the name of the instance?
When exactly do you get the error message?
Cut and paste/attach sqlsp.log (from the node where you started the setup) ?

Installed MSDE on windowsxp pro.
When computer restarts, icon seen at System Tray.
Click on icon and SQL Server Service Manager.
Server field blank
Services field blank
typed in computername for Server field
select start/continue button.
error message that no service has been selected.
Where did I go wrong?

from your log file, your MSDE is runnig... but you probably installed MSDE
without network protocols support, and this unfortunately can cause the
corresponding instance not to show up in the SQL Server Service Manager, as
reported in http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;814132

Trying entering
MASTER\MYFIRSTSQLSERVER
on the server line of SQL Server Manager, wait a painfully long time with
the hour glass, and eventually you should see your services state.
Unfortunately, you'll have to do this everytime as it won't stick. ( Don't
you wish you had shortened that instance name now? ;-) )

Help with installation of Standard SQL Server 2000

I have installed IIS, VS.NET 2003, .NET 2.0 Framework, and now I have tried to install the standard version of SQL Server 2000 and it is telling me that I can only install the client components. The O/S is Windows XP Pro on a laptop.

It detected that its not running on a server thats all.

Once installed browse to MSDE folder and install that.

Everthing should work fine from there.
